"life without sickness is the limitless wealth" , if you are overweight or having family history of diabetes or excessive smoking. There is a high possibilty of becoming diabetic. India is called Diabetic capital of the world. Currently 6.2 crore Indians are diagnosed with diabetes and globally 15 lakh people are losing their lives every year. It is a long term disease and if left untreated will lead to complications.

Type 1 diabetes, called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile onset diabetes, may account for 5 percent to 10 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Risk factors include autoimmune, genetic and environmental factors.

Type 2 diabetes is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes may account for about 90 percent to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.

Gestational diabetes develops in 2 percent to 5 percent of all pregnancies but usually disappears when a pregnancy is over. Gestational diabetes occurs more frequently in Indians, and people with a family history of diabetes than in other groups.

Pre-diabetes: Unlike in the West, where older populations are mostly affected, the burden of diabetes in Asian countries is disproportionately high in young- to middle-aged adults. So, the incidence of Pre-Diabetes is high in Asian countries.
